My Grocery List

Grains


Miracle Noodles, Miracle Rice, Tofu Shiritake Noodles and Pasta Slims:  
  • They are 0-25 calories per serving and Gluten free
  • Look for them at Rockbridge HyVee and Gerbes 
  • They are in the refrigerator of the health food section.  
  • Since they only have 0-25 calories per serving they can save you at least 200 calories if used in place of normal pasta.
  • They are gluten free.
  • They cost about $2.00-$2.50/bag
  • Don't let the smell and appearance drive you away, they are tasty but for adventurous eaters only!




Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta
  • This is white pasta with the benefits of wholegrain pasta. It has 5g of fiber, 6g protein, plus Calcium and vitamin D. 
  • There is also 0mg of sodium and 0mg of cholesterol.






Thomas Light (100 calorie) whole wheat english muffins


Bagel Thins (Thomas)
  • Only 110 calories and a variety of flavors
  • Recommend eating this with light cheese wedges (35 calories each) by The Laughing Cow, reduced sugar jelly, or PB2



La Tortilla Factory Tortillas- 100 calories each (or 50 calories for small ones) and packed with 12g of fiber and 9g of protein. 
  • Find these at HyVee in the health food section.
  • Stick to the original wheat flavors, the others taste funny to me.

Mame Lupe Low Carb TortillasAt 60 calories each they are about half of the calories as many tortillas of the same size.
  • These can be found at Gerbes.


Flat Out Wraps- Light Original- 90 calories and 9g of fiber. 
  • You can find these at HyVee, Walmart, and Schnucks by the deli counter and ready-made foods section. 






Sara Lee 45 calorie delightful bread- Normal bread is 70 calories/ serving. They also make 80 calorie hamburger and hot dog buns, very tasty! 





Fiber One Original cereal-Look for recipes on my blog...

More than just a bowl of cereal...

  • 30 chips for 110 calories
  • They are tasty and flavorful
  • I found these at Schnucks, HyVee, and at Gerbes in the cracker and snack isle.

Morning Star Spicy Black Bean Veggie Burgers:
  • In addition to using as directed, try crumbling up these patties to use as a replacement for ground meats in taco salads and quesadillas. 

WorldCatch Salmon Burgers - 40oz 
  • Available at Sam's. 
  • These pre-formed frozen burgers are only 130 calories and make portion control easy. Loaded with protein and Omega-3's.  
 

Sara Lee "Fresh Ideas" deli meats
  • This deli meat is lower in sodium than most other options.
  • It is available by the deli counter, usually in the same refriderator as the pre-made foods and specialty cheeses. 
    • You will not find it by the regular prepackaged deli meats

Margarines, Spreads, Sauces, And Extras:


Slimcado- These contain 1/3 less fat than regular avocados. They are really good! You can usually find them at HyVee by the regular avocados. They are larger than a regular avocado.








PB2
At only 45 calories per serving (2 Tablespoons), it has less than 1/4th of the calories as regular peanut butter which contains 200 calories per serving (2 Tablespoons).

It comes in 2 flavors: original and chocolate (Chocolate is so good!)
  • Find it at HyVee in the health food section. 
  • PB2 contains 5g of protein, which is the same amount of protein in regular peanut butter
  • It is lower in calories because it doesn't contain all the fat that regular peanut butter has.
  • Just add water to the powder and it becomes spreadable
  • There are now $1.00 sample packets available for you to try before you buy a whole jar.
  • It costs $5.00 for a 14 serving jar








Smucker's low sugar jelly, any low sugar jelly will do.



  • My personal favorite.
  • No artificial sweeteners
  • Half the calories of regular jelly
  • Same awesome taste, HyVee has a wide variety of flavors

Kraft dressings
  • Most Kraft light and fat free dressings are good. My favorites are light raspberry vinaigrette,  light asian toasted sesame, fat free creamy Caesar, and fat free Italian


Newman's Own Light Sesame Ginger
  • Only 35 calories per serving. One of my favorites. 

Old Cape Cod Toasted Soy and Sesame Ginger Salad dressing:







  • Only 40 calories per serving
  • Use on salad, in stir fry, or to marinade meats


"Fat Free" hot chocolate- At 20 calories per serving (or 10 per Tablespoon), this is less than 1/4th of the calories of regular hot chocolate mix. 
  • Kroger (Gerbes) has its own brand and is usually inexpensive but its 25 calories for 2 TBSP
  • Nestle fat free hot cocoa mix is my FAVORITE, its very good, comes in a tin, and is 10 calories per tablespoon.  (sometimes I add extra cocoa powder, also 10 calories per TBSP).


Classico "Tomato Basil" Pasta Sauce- 50 calories per serving instead of 100 calories per serving of traditional pasta sauce.

  • Tastes much better than Ragu and Hunts "No sugar added" versions which are equal in calories. 
  • I use this on pizza because it has less calories than pizza sauce and more flavor because of the herbs that are in it.

Smart Balance Light and Promise Light- Contain healthy fats, no trans fats (no partially hydrogenated oils),  and only 45-50 calories per tablespoon (instead of 80-100 calories found in regular butter and margarine spreads).



Benecol And Take Control- Contain cholesterol lowering stanols. (These spreads contain as many calories as regular butter so should be used in moderation).



The Freezer Section:
-I try to keep these stocked at all times, and whenever there is a sale I buy in bulk.

Bird's Eye Steamers "Asian Medley" 
  • One of the BEST frozen veggie bags I have ever bought. I keep on around at all times! Find at all grocery stores in town.

Frozen Meals: 
  • Most any Lean Cuisine, Smart Ones, and Healthy Choice Frozen dinners are calorie and sodium appropriate
My Favorites: 
  • Cedar Lane Eggplant Parmesan only 160 YUMMY calories (Unless you eat the entire dinner and it is 320)







  •  Lean Cuisine 
    • Santa Fe-Style rice and beans, Chicken and Spinach panini, Pepperoni pizza ( I usually remove the pepperonies), Roasted Honey chicken, Lemon grass chicken, Chicken philly, and many more!


    • Smart Ones



    • Healthy Choice
    Considerations when buying frozen meals....
    • Some frozen entrees contain 200 calories or less and make great filling snack options.
    • Watch out for sodium, which should be less than 900mg for your entire meal. These brands generally contain less than 900mg, but its always safe to check first.
    • Watch out for high calories in some of the larger Healthy Choice dinners, some can be over 350 calories each.

    Juices, Beverages, and Alcohol

    Non flavored vodka, non spiced rum, and tequilla- contain less sugar and less non-alcohol calories than their flavored versions. Use diet soda, crystal light, or diet tonic water when making mixers.


    Alcohol ALWAYS contains 7 calories per gram. The liquid that the alcohol is found in can contain tons of calories from sugar so be aware of sugary drinks. 


    Light beer- the name speaks for itself, about 100 calories per beer.


    "Light, No Sugar Added, and 50% Less Sugar" Orange Juice- At 50 calories per cup, this orange juice is half as many calories as regular orange juice but still tastes great.

















    Skim Milk Plus- At only 80 calories, it has consistency of 2% milk but the same calories and fat as skim milk.
    • Smart Balance makes their own version and can be found at most stores.
    • Gerbes has their own version. It has an orange cap and an orange label (be careful not to pick up the 1% milk which has a yellow cap). 


    Almond Milk, Unsweetened Vanilla or Original-Only 35-60 calories per cup (less than skim milk). Sweetened flavors can have up to 160 calories and as much as 30g of sugar per cup, make sure to read the label.
    • Comes in refrigerated and shelf stable containers, both found in the organic section of the grocery store  
    • Benefits over cows milk: 
      • more calcium (about 45% of your daily recommended calcium intake, cow's milk only has 30%). 
      • cholesterol free  
      • Low fat, contains a small amount of healthy monounsaturated fat. 
      • Has antioxidants
      • Nice thick consistency and texture
    • One downside is that it has less protein than regular milk


      Desserts

      Arctic Zero- at 150 calories per pint, this ice cream is better than 1/2 cup (1 serving) of most reduced fat ice creams. It is gluten free, lactose free, fat free, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, a good source of protein and fiber. 
      • Get it as Schnucks and HyVee. MINT CHOCOLATE IS BEST!!! 
      • Vanilla and cookies n cream are also good.
         




        Skinny Cow Ice Cream products- Found in most grocery stores.
        Smart Ones Desserts
        Careful, can still be almost 200 calories per small container.

        Turkey Hill Ice Cream
        • Fortified with vitamin D and Calcium. 
        • Flavor wise, this ice cream is my personal favorite
        • It is not low calorie, but they do make light versions of the ice cream. (The calories are equal to other brands such as Edy's).  


        No Puge Fudge BrowniesNo Pudge! Brownies contain 0 grams of fat and only 120 calories per serving. 

        • When using fat free yogurt, No Pudge! Brownies make the perfect fat free, low calorie chocolate treat for anyone.
        • No Pudge! Brownies are lactose free by substituting yogurt with applesauce, soy yogurt or silken tofu and adding 1 teaspoon of vanilla you can enjoy fudgy delicious lactose free brownies.
        • Found in the organic section of HyVee and the regular baking isle at Gerbes.
